'Bottle Bomb' Found on Golf Course Near Glastonbury Line

Police, fire and Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) personnel responded to the early Thursday morning after a "suspicious device" was found on the ninth hole of the club's golf course. 

Upon inspection, the device - a two-liter soda bottle with liquid inside - was determined to be a homed explosive device. A groundskeeper initially noticed the bottle, which was surrounded by a circle of dead grass, and called police. Units arrived on the scene at approximately 8:13 a.m. Thursday morning.

Assistant Fire Chief David Billings said personnel from the DEEP and the Hartford Police Bomb Squad were able "neutralize" the device on scene and then dispose of it.

Billings said Manchester Police are investigating the incident, and asked residents to be alert and pay attention to their immediate surroundings. If a bottle looks like a normal bottle, go ahead and toss it in the trash, he said, but if it looks swollen or misshapen – as if it might burst – leave it alone and call 911.
