UPDATE: Glastonbury Plastics Plant Continues to Burn

Nearby homes have been evacuated and state environmental officials warn against breathing in smoke billowing from the Roaring Brook blaze.

Update: 4:40 p.m.

A plastics manufacturing plant has been burning for hours on Roaring Brook Plaza in Glastonbury, as several area fire companies battle the flames and billowing clouds of smoke.

Because it’s not entirely certain what is burning inside the plant at 32 Roaring Brook, several residences on nearby Sherbrook Drive have been evacuated and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was called to the scene on Wednesday, according to NBC Connecticut. The DEEP also is warning people not to breathe in the smoke.

Employees of Preferred Display have told officials the company makes acrylic cosmetic displays and other plastic products.

Firefighters from Colchester, Hebron, Marlborough, Portland and East Hampton are providing mutual aid to Glastonbury firefighters who were called to the scene about 11:30 a.m. by an employee who reported a portion of the roof was on fire.

Firefighters are using water from the nearby Roaring Brook and Eastbury Pond to extinguish the blaze, according to The Courant.

Officials said this is the largest fire in Glastonbury in decades and that crews will remain on the scene overnight to extinguish hotspots, according to reports.

So far, no injuries have been reported.

Employees at a Glastonbury manufacturing facility have been evacuated as a two-alarm fire ripped through the building at 32 Roaring Brook Plaza Wednesday afternoon.

According to NBC Connecticut, the address is for Pemco Manufacturing and officials said everyone who was in the building is safe.

WTIC reports the burning building is located behind the East Glastonbury Post Office on Route 83.

Fisher Hill Road, which leads to the fire scene, is closed while crews battle the blaze, is closed, according to the NBC Connecticut report that can be found here.

The fire was reported about 11:30 a.m., according to The Hartford Courant.
