Guy Bishop of Virginia is selling the letter, which he purchased from a postal history dealer. Bishop says he believes Wilson and Willis Dewey were sons of Aaron Dewey and Louisa Gillett and that the $250 mentioned in the letter has some connection to an inheritance.
"I believe that the $250 might have something to do with the girl getting a $250 inheritance (or something like that), with a stipulation that if/when she marries, then the $250 will be cut off," Bishop said in an email. "Just my guess."
