The 68th anniversary of the Hartford Circus Fire, the singularly most devastating tragedy that ever occurred in the area, passed on July 6. Around that time, I began rereading The Circus Fire, a non-fiction work by Avon-based author Stewart O’Nan that details what happened that fateful day.
The history is presented chronologically from years before the date of the fire through the present day. The Circus Fire is not only an incredibly detailed account of the panic, havoc and heroism that happened during the fire and the medical, civic and criminal aftermath, but also a deeply immersive look at what life was like in World War II-era northern Connecticut. Look for a copy at your local library, bookstore or online.
