East Granby Budget Apparently Defeated

Results so close officials will see if recount is necessary

The proposed 2013-2014 East Granby Budget plan was apparently defeated at referendum Tuesday but the results are so close town officials plan to see whether a recount is necessary.

The results came in at 622 no votes and 618 yes votes for the $20,093,553 plan, first selectman James Hayden said.

Since the count is so close the town will check with the Secretary of the state's Office to see whether a recount is in order, Hayden added. The margin does meet the qualification for a general election recount so the town will see if the same rule applies, he said.

"It appears it was defeated pending the results of the secretary of the state's office," Hayden said.

Approximately 33 percent of the town's 3,700 qualified electors voted.

The budget also included the following advisory questions, which received the following votes.

  • In your opinion is the General Government Budget in the amount of $4,344,540, an increase of 3.0% for Fiscal Year 2013/2014, the right amount, too low, or too high?
  • 495 - just right
    155 - too low
    568 - too high

  • In your opinion is the Board of Education Budget in the amount of $14,721,000, an increase of 4.85% for Fiscal Year 2013/2014, the right amount, too low, or too high?
  • 306 - just right
    250 - too low
    663 - too high

The Boards of Selectmen and finance both have meetings Wednesday night.

Assuming the vote is declared a defeat, the finance board would likely make some adjustments. Selectmen will likely discuss the budget as well and at some point schedule a second town meeting and referendum.
