Granby, East Granby Students Head Back to School Today

UPDATE: The first day of school was busy but went well, according to administrators in Granby and East Granby public schools. East Granby High School had a small swarm of students making last minute schedule changes, but new principal David Peling said things were going as expected.
"We're off to a great start," Peling said. "We're busy but fine."
At Granby High School, the hallways seemed calm and principal Patricia Law praised upclassmen serving as mentors to younger students. She said teachers were engaging students and the first day had gone well.

"The students have been doing great," Law said.

The Granby public school system clocks in with a total of 180 school days this year, not including professional development days, according to the master district calendar. Although it’s only the first day of school, keep in mind that the last day of school for the 2012-2013 academic year is Thursday, June 13 (barring any emergency make-up days) and graduation takes place June 13.
More recent upcoming special events in at Granby schools include open houses at for first grade on Sept. 10, for second grade on Sept. 6 and kindergarten on Sept. 11. and host their third and fourth grade open houses on Sept. 18 and their fifth and sixth grade open houses on Sept. 20. The has its open house on Sept. 12 and parents’ day on Oct. 5. High school students have their open house Sept. 13 and senior parents’ night on Sept. 18, according to the district calendar.
East Granby students have two extra instructional days this year, for a total of 182 school days. Parent-teacher conferences are coming up November. June 20 is the anticipated last day of school in East Granby.
Both schools have their first official holiday on Columbus Day, Oct. 8, so parents that have hosted their children all summer long get a break during the next five weeks.

One more important piece of information for Granby students in kindergarten through sixth grade: The Granby Parks and Recreation department is offering a twice-weekly supplemental French education program immediately after school for students in third through sixth grades at their respective schools. Students in kindergarten through sixth grade can take an additional, twice-weekly Spanish classes at their respective institutions. Additionally, Kearns students have the special option of a class in Russian once each week.
