Granby Open Farm Day Offers a Full Range of Activities Saturday

A cornucopia of farm activities, many of them free, are available at farms across Granby Sept. 8.

Granby’s first ever Open Farm Day is coming up Saturday, Sept. 8, offering attendees 13 different venues to visit, a full day of varied events and the use of a farm passport program to win prizes from each destination.

Organized by the Granby Agricultural Commission, the full display of farm-related activities is available for viewing and participation. Pony rides, grooming classes, riding clinics are all offered for horse lovers; events involving edibles like garlic braiding, farm tours, cooking demos and growing question and answer sessions are offered for foodies; while sheep shearing, visits with horses, pigs, chickens and cows are all on the schedule for animal lovers.

Cartooning demos, tractor photos, a corn maze, produce judging and a chicken barbeque make up just a few of the other many attractions.

The agricultural commission is encouraging area residents to “experience the variety of agriculture that Granby has to offer.” To encourage visits to multiple farms, a farm passport program is being instituted.

Pick up a farm passport at any of the participating locations on Sept. 8 and use to collect a stamp at each successive farm visited. Attendees can win a prize with just one stamp, but gathering six stamps or more gets collectors a shot at winning a basket of the community-supported-agriculture style Granby Sampler, which features products from the farms on Saturday’s tour.
