It’s Wine Season Again at Granby’s Lost Acres!
Behind the Counter interviews Michelle Niedermeyer, co-owner of the Granby business.

After closing for the winter months, Lost Acres Vineyard reopened its tasting room for the season Friday, selling its North Granby wine by the glass and bottle again.
Granby resident Michelle Niedermeyer co-owns the business on Lost Acres Road with her husband, Kevin Riggott.
In addition to the tasting room, the vineyard offers classes and events, such as “Uncorked Art,” a watercolor class, on April 4. Participants get a glass of wine. The calendar is available on the Lost Acres website.
Patch asked Niedermeyer to tell us about Lost Acres and here’s what we found.
Patch: When did your business open? Is it family-run?
Niedermeyer: “We started working on the vineyard in 2008, and we opened for business September 2011. My husband Kevin Riggott and I own and operate the company. Kevin is the winemaker and grape grower and I work in the office and tasting room.”
Patch: What services do you offer at your company?
Niedermeyer: “Our primary service is we grow grapes and make wine for sale. We offer wine tastings at our tasting room, and sell our wine there as well. We also have areas for picnics and sell cheese plates and antipasto plates. In addition to the grapes and wine, we raise pigs, horses and chickens.”
Patch: Why did you decide to open in Granby and what made you interested in your field?
Niedermeyer: “We wanted to have our vineyard in Granby because it is very farm-friendly and the community is very supportive. That was our sense when we started this project and it has been proven many times over in the past 5 years. We wanted an agricultural business and since Kevin was already a hobby winemaker, a vineyard seemed to make sense.”
Patch: Do you have a business mantra you live by?
Niedermeyer: “Strive for perfection and accept excellence.”
Patch: Can you tell us about your business background?
Niedermeyer: “I was a project manager and consultant for over 20 years. The project management experience has been invaluable to me in running all aspects of this business. On a surprising note, I am also frequently using my skills learned when I was a waitress in high school in the Tasting Room.”
Patch: Finish the sentence. When I'm not working I'm...
Niedermeyer: “Hmmm, I don't think there are many times we are not working, but the most fun parts of our work are being with new and old friends, sampling the wine of course, and riding our horses.”
