2 Babies Rescued After Falling into Frigid Waters of Greenwich Point

GREENWICH, CT - An off-duty Greenwich Police officer is being credited with saving two babies whose stroller rolled into the frigid water of Eagle Pond at Greenwich Point Park on Friday.

According to police it was about 4 p.m. when a Stamford mother, walking a dog, with her 13-month and six-month-old babies strapped into a stroller, stopped to talk with a friend.

Somehow the stroller rolled, hit an embankment and dropped seven feet into Eagle Pond, a quasi-fresh water pond.

According to Greenwich Police, Officer Thomas Huestis happened to be in the park, witnessed what happened and dove into the water. He grabbed both children, a 13-month-old and a six-week-old.

According to underground.com, the water temperature was about 42 degrees.

Police said that three other unidentified bystanders assisted the mother and children. The mother and the two infants were taken to Stamford Hospital for treatment and have been released.

Police Chief James Heavey said, "The parents of the children would like to keep their identities anonymous but they did want to thank everyone for helping today and they told me that Officer Huestis was 'tremendous.'"
