Beloved Retired Greenwich Police Marine Officer Mourned By Department
Police said Peter Silbereisen contributed to the evacuation of lower Manhattan on Sept. 11, 2001, and served the department for 29 years.
GREENWICH, CT — Peter Silbereisen, a retired police marine officer who served with the Greenwich Police Department for nearly 30 years, recently died at the age of 66, according to the department.
In a Facebook post, police said Silbereisen joined the department on Oct. 4, 1982, and "dedicated 29 years of exemplary service to the town of Greenwich" before retiring on Feb. 1, 2012.
Silbereisen was assigned to the department's Marine Section in 1989, where he combined his passion for the water with his unwavering commitment to public safety.

"As a licensed merchant marine officer and master of steam and motor vessels rated at 100 tons, he distinguished himself as an expert in marine law, navigation and investigation," police wrote on Facebook.
Silbereisen was also commended for contributing to the evacuation of lower Manhattan on Sept. 11, 2001, and for his efforts "during the largest boat rescue operation on Long Island Sound in 2002, where 149 passengers were safely transported to land following the Greenwich Ferry running aground," according to police.

Silbereisen received numerous commendations and expressions of gratitude from the community throughout his career and was consistently praised for his rapid response and calm, professional demeanor during challenging situations, police said.
"The Greenwich Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the Silbereisen family and joins them in remembering and honoring Officer Silbereisen's remarkable legacy of service and dedication," police wrote on Facebook.
Calling hours are scheduled to take place March 31 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Castiglione Funeral Home, located at 544 Old Post Road 3 in Greenwich. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held April 1 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, located at 178 Greenwich Avenue in Greenwich.
