Construction Equipment Thefts Continue in Greenwich

Police say there is an 'uptick' of thefts from construction sites.

The rash of thefts of construction equipment in Greenwich continues as police are investigating another report of missing equipment from a home construction site in the backcountry.

Various pieces of equipment worth “several thousand dollars” was reported missing from a home under construction in the 700 block of Lake Avenue on Sunday morning.

“We clearly are seeing a lot of this lately. It is definitely an uptick,” said police Lt. Kraig Gray.

“Let contractors be aware of anyone who is strange to a construction site … someone who doesn’t belong there and may be casing out the site,” Gray said.

In the Lake Avenue incident, someone kicked in a door of the home and swiped the equipment valued at between $5,000 and $10,000, according to Gray. An employee checking the site reported the theft about 9:15 a.m. Sunday.

Gray said contractors should mark their equipment “with a unique marking, preferably engraved,” and to photograph items.
