Greenwich Fire Department Hires New Recruit

The town's newest firefighter is a police officer who also is a veteran of the FDNY.

A veteran of both police and fire services in New York, has been sworn in as the Greenwich Fire Department’s newest recruit.

Christopher Kelly of Sayville, NY, was sworn in at a Town Hall ceremony Monday by First Selectman Peter Tesei, who also serves as Greenwich’s Fire Commissioner. Kelly’s father Tim, a retired New York Fire Department lieutenant, presented the GFD badge to his son.

Kelly attended the Suffolk County Police Academy in 2013 and currently is a police officer for the Village of Westhampton Beach, in Suffolk County. He also served as an Emergency Medical Technician and Hazmat Technician for the New York City Fire Department for four years, based in Queens.

Kelly graduated from Iona College with a bachelor’s degree in biology and physical therapy.

He also is a U.S. Coast Guard certified Master Captain and has been the captain of the Fire Island, NY ferry for 10 years.

Kelly will begin the 15-week training program at the Connecticut Fire Academy in Windsor Locks on Feb 17.
