Daily Five: An Award, 'Run Like A Girl’ and The Souper Supper

1. Today is Wednesday, April 4. The National Weather Service predicts partly sunny skies, a wind of 13 to 16 mph and a high temperature of 62 degrees. Tonight will be mostly clear and breezy, with a low of 41 degrees.
2. Student Erika Mayer was among 30 winners of the Connecticut Association of Secondary Schools’ Governor’s Scholar award, which recognizes academically-talented students. High School Principal Joe Arcarese said 150 students from across the state competed.
The award is given based on class rank, SAT scores and CAPT scores. Students are also required to write an essay in one hour, on a topic given to them on the spot. Mayer, 16, is the top ranked junior at Fitch.

3. will hold the first meeting of its “Run Like A Girl” club today for students in grades 3, 4 and 5. Third-grade Teacher Cassie Rasmussen started the club to promote fitness among girls, and 47 students signed up. The club will meet after school every Wednesday.
4. collected more than $200 and 100 donated food items for the Groton Food Pantry during the school’s annual “Souper Supper,” Superintenent Paul Kadri said. Second grade teacher Leigh Sammons said the event started as a way for families to meet and share a meal, but has grown.

This year’s supper drew in several hundred people, she said. About 12 to 15 restaurants provided soup, staff also contributed soup, and families brought bread, crackers or dessert to share, along with a canned item to donate.
5. The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce is looking for students to serve as interns this summer. The interns would help with projects, special events, along with office duties like answering phones. To apply, contact Tricia Walsh at (860) 572-9578.
