Daily Five: A Thanksgiving Luncheon, Breakfast with Santa and The Homecoming Dance

1.  Today is Tuesday, Nov. 20. The National Weather Service predicts partly sunny skies and a high temperature of 51 degrees. Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 37 degrees.

2.  The Groton Senior Center’s Thanksgiving luncheon is at 11:30 a.m. today at the center. Chef Lew and his helpers have cooked a meal including salad, turkey with stuffing and gravy, mashed potatoes, peas and carrots, butternut squash, cranberry sauce and rolls. Pies will be served for dessert. The meal is $12 for residents and $14 for non-residents; call (860) 441-6785 for more information.

3.  Breakfast with Santa is also coming up, from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. on Dec. 1 at the Senior Center. Every child gets a present. You must bring your own camera to take pictures of the children with Santa. The breakfast is pancakes, bacon, orange juice, milk, coffee and tea, and the cost is $6 for adults; $4 for children ages 4-10. Children under 3 are fee.

4.  The Fitch High School homecoming dance originally scheduled for Nov. 3 has been rescheduled to Dec. 15 due to the hurricane. Also, the 2013 Seniors’ Parents meeting will be held at 7 p.m. today in the school cafeteria. The group needs your help to plan the graduation party, so stop by if you have a senior!

5.  The third in a series of book discussions on educational topics will be held at 7 p.m. today in Groton Public Library. The topic is “Flip Your Classroom”, and Karen Bryer, coordinator of the technology curriculum for Groton Public Schools, will lead the discussion on what a flipped classroom is and how it might be used in Groton.

The basic premise is that students need teachers available to answer questions and help if they get stuck, but they don’t need teachers present to listen to a lecture.
