1. Today is Thursday, March 1. The National Weather Service predicts rain, then cloudy skies and a high temperature of 41 degrees. The low will fall to 31 degrees tonight.
2. The Board of Assessment Appeals starts meeting Monday to handle appeals of for the October 2011 grand list, and for the 2010 supplemental motor vehicle grand list.
The board will hold an information session at 6:30 p.m. on Monday in the Town Hall Annex, and appeal hearings from noon until 5 p.m. on Tuesday; from noon until 4 p.m. on Thursday; and from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday in the annex. Hearings will also be held March 12, 14 and 17.

Only property owners who submitted petition forms to the Groton Assessor's Office by Feb. 20 may appeal.
3. Tours of the Saturday. Superintendent Paul Kadri and Wes Greenleaf, director of facilities and maintenance for the public schools, will hold the tours, which will focus on building structure, and mechanical systems. Tours will be held from 8 a.m. until 9:15 a.m. at Cutler Middle School; from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at Fitch Middle School; and from 11 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. at West Side Middle School.

4. The at Groton Public Library, and the three friends of library groups in Groton are looking for entries. An edible book is a creation that is related to a book – either based on the story, title or character - and is edible. The event is part of the International Edible Book Festival, which has examples on its website www.books2eat.com, if you’d like to take a look. Entry forms are available at the three Groton libraries and must be turned in before March 25.
5. The Department of Social Services Medicare Rx- Xpress Bus will be at Groton Human Services from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 22 if you need help with food or medical assistance. The bus provides screenings for Medicaid and Medicare prescription assistance, HUSKY medical insurance and food stamp applications.
