Daily Five: Council To Vote On New Historic District Commission Members
Five Things To Know Tuesday, March 20

1. Today is Tuesday, March 20. The National Weather Service predicts fog before 9 a.m., then partly sunny skies and a high temperature of 56 degrees. Tonight will be cloudy with a low of 48 degrees.
2. The Town Council meets at 7:30 p.m. today in the Town Hall Annex and is scheduled to vote on appointing . William Everett, who is retired from the legal department at Electric Boat, applied to serve on the commission on Oct. 26. He served on Groton's Zoning Board of Appeals from 1972 until 1981.
James Kimenker, a partner in a real estate development and management firm, applied for a commission seat on Jan. 18. He is past president of the Mystic River Historic Society and remains on the society’s board of trustees.

3. The council will also vote on whether to delay drainage work at Judson Avenue until some future time. The council recently learned the drainage improvements would cost an estimated $1.61 million. The resolution before councilors directs staff “to place this project for consideration in a future fiscal year.”
4. The council will also set the annual budget meeting for Representative Town Meeting for 7 p.m. on Monday, April 30 at the Groton Senior Center. for the coming fiscal year, an increase of 3.5 percent.

If adopted as proposed, the budget would increase the tax rate from 18.89 mills to 20.51 mills, or 8.6 percent.
5. Cindy Miffitt, a library aide at , recently won the 2012 Connecticut Library Association’s Support Staff of the Year Award, and will be honored at the association’s 121st annual conference on May 8. Miffitt has worked for 27 years in the children’s room.
Beth Crowley wrote in nominating her: “The high degree of professionalism she brings to her job has elevated the expectation for all of the library aides and sets the example for new hires to follow.”
