Daily Five: Groton Business Association Distributes 10,000 Guides

Five Things To Know Wednesday, July 18

1.  Today is Wednesday, July 18. It’ll be hot, with a chance thunderstorms and heavy rain. The National Weather Service forecasts a high temperature of 87 degrees and a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon, with some producing hail, gusty wind and heavy rain. Tonight there’s a 70 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms, and the temperature will fall to 71 degrees.

2.  The Groton Business Association has produced a “Groton Guide”, which lists historic sites, recreational opportunities, attractions, events and celebrations and includes a map of the town.  Jim Bates, chairman of the Groton Business Association, said the organization printed 10,000 copies and distributed them throughout the region.

“They’re in hotels, motels, restaurants, they’re in visitor centers,” he told the Town Council on Tuesday. “We’re really excited, we’re proud that we were able to do this.”

The business association recently printed another 10,000 copies and will receive them in another week, he said.

3.  The Groton School Department is working on a program to reach out to parents and the community. Groton Public Schools Night will be a two-hour program for parents and community members that will take place three to four times a year and be held at different schools, according to a briefing memo by Interim Superintendent Randall Collins.

The program will give parents the option of participating in various half-hour informational sessions on topics like technology, special education services and bullying.

4.  The Concerts in the Park series continues at 6:30 p.m. on Friday in Washington Park, with the band 9Teen. All concerts are free, and you can pack a picnic dinner.

The remaining schedule for bands is: July 27, Coastline Swing Bank; August 3, no concert due to City of Groton Day; August 10, The Cartells; August 24, Rewind.

5.  The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce’s public access show “Mystic Matters” will feature Travis Lombardi, owner of Best Health Physical Therapy, on Monday. The show will air at 8 p.m. on July 23 on Comcast Channel 12 and Thames Valley Communications Channel 12. Best Health provides physical therapy and treats patients for issues like sports, orthopedic, neck and back and neurological injuries.
