Speeding Driver Dies Following Crash In Groton, Police Say (patch.com) — A speeding driver who fled a Groton police officer early Tuesday died after crashing into a steel traffic pole on Route 12 near Kings Highway, temporarily closing Long Hill Road during the investigation. Police say a loaded handgun was found in the car, and they are asking anyone with information to contact the Groton Police Department as they continue to investigate.

Italian Restaurant Now Open In Groton (patch.com) — Food lovers in Groton have a new option with Osteria D'Ambra now open on Long Hill Road, serving classic Italian starters, pastas, mains, and desserts. The restaurant offers catering, a lively atmosphere with music and a selfie area, and is planning a special New Year’s Eve menu featuring dishes like escarole pie and surf and turf.
   

3. Major milestone for USS Groton Sail Monument (theday.com) — A massive piece of Groton’s naval history is back in town as the USS Groton’s sail and other components arrive for restoration at Electric Boat before becoming a monument near the Groton Public Library on Route 117. The nonprofit foundation is coordinating repairs, donated labor, and a major fundraising push to complete the full-scale display honoring the region’s submarine legacy.
   

4. How Seuk Kim's tragic plane crash built a volunteer army of pet rescuers (ground.news) — A volunteer pet-rescue network now regularly flies animals into Groton-New London Airport as part of a multi-state relay that moves dogs and cats from crowded Southern shelters to Northern foster homes. The effort, inspired by pilot Seuk Kim’s fatal 2024 crash, has grown to use multiple planes and airports, sharply reducing euthanasia rates while volunteers work to honor his legacy. Local residents may see more rescue flights and opportunities to help.
   

5. U.S. Navy Takes Delivery of USS Idaho, Latest Virginia-Class Attack Submarine (overtdefense.com) — Electric Boat’s Groton shipyard has delivered the new Virginia-class attack submarine USS Idaho to the U.S. Navy, marking the second Virginia-class delivery of 2025. Built in partnership with Newport News, the high-tech sub will undergo testing before an expected 2026 commissioning, underscoring Groton’s central role in the nation’s undersea fleet.
