Daily Five: Groton Police Study Moving Forward

Five Things To Know Monday, June 11

1.  Today is Monday, June 11.   The National Weather Service predicts mostly sunny skies and a high temperature of 70 degrees. Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low of 57 degrees.

2.  A study of police services in Groton is proceeding.  Groton received 11 responses to its request for proposals for an assessment of police services, and representatives of the city, town and Groton Long Point have chosen the Police Executive Research Forum, of Washington, D.C. as its preferred consultant. 

The group has completed more than 200 studies or evaluations of state, county, local and campus police departments, sheriff’s offices or federal law enforcement agencies according to a letter to the town.

The study would cost about $38,000 and be completed in 16 weeks, according to the consultant’s proposed budget and timeline.

3.  The Department of Public Works has come up with a preliminary estimate for a bond ordinance that would be drafted to repair roads in the town, city and Groton Long Point. The preliminary figures call for $7.3 million to be spent over five years, or $1.46 million to be spent in one year if the town goes that route. The town council would vote on the bond ordinance at its June 12 or June 26 meeting.

4.  Groton Public Library’s matinee movie at 2 p.m. today is, The Descendants, starring George Clooney. The film is about landowner who tries to reconnect with his daughters after his life is put on life support after a boating accident. The movie is 115 minutes and rated R for language. It’s free and open to the public.

5.  As a reminder, Wednesday is an early release day for students at Mary Morrisson, West Side Middle School, Fitch Middle School and Cutler Middle School only. Students are leaving early to give teachers and staff time to pack the schools.
