Daily Five: Hurricane Sandy Will Cost Groton Schools Estimated $49,000

1.  Today is Tuesday, Dec. 11.  The National Weather Service predicts mostly cloudy skies, then gradual clearing and a high temperature of 50 degrees. The low will drop to 29 degrees tonight. 

2.  Groton Public Schools accumulated $49,585 in storm-related costs due to Hurricane Sandy, according to an estimate provided Monday by School Facilities Director Wayne Robarch.

Most of the costs are related to roof repairs needed at Fitch High School ($20,954) and at West Side Middle School ($21,990), with additional money needed to repair fencing at Northeast Academy.

The schools also had food costs due to serving people at the emergency shelter and fuel costs due to running generators.

3.  The Los Angeles class submarine USS San Juan returns to Naval Submarine Base New London today and when it returns, jolly "Old Saint Nicholas" will deliver gifts to military children. Operation Homefront and Dollar Tree donated the toys, which will also be given to children in New York and New Jersey. 

4.  Groton Public Library will hold a recycled books craft workshop for teens and adults at 6 p.m. today at the library. The idea is to use old books to create art that can be given as gifts. The program is free, but the library is asking people to register by calling (860) 441-6750 or by sending an e-mail to acampbell@groton-ct.gov .

5.  The Mystic & Noank Library will host a program by Mystic author Lisa Saunders from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at the library. The free program will include presentation based on her new book, Mystic Seafarer’s Trail, a memoir that looks at the haunts and homes of Mystic's noted seafarers. The evening includes a slide presentation, light refreshments, and a book signing. A portion of book sales benefit the library.
