Daily Five: Lawyer Advises Groton School Board to Comply With Racial Balance Rule
Five Things To Know, Tuesday, March 6

1. Today is Tuesday, March 6. The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies, a high temperature of 39 degrees and a wind of 9 to 14 mph. It will be clear tonight, and the low will drop to 31 degrees.
2. A lawyer for the school department has advised the school board that it’s in Groton’s best interest to come up with a plan that satisfies the state’s requirement for racial balance in the schools. In a letter read at the board of education meeting Monda, the lawyer said the plan can be creative.
The letter confirmed that the state department of education does not have authority to grant a waiver of the racial balance law and is unlikely to do so. The lawyer added that if Groton challenged the law in court, it would likely end up ordered by the court to come up with a plan to create racial balance or could end up with a plan it does not want.
