Five Things To Know, Tuesday, Nov. 13

1.  Today is Tuesday, Nov. 13. The National Weather Service predicts cloudy skies, a 70 percent chance of showers and falling temperatures, down to 48 degrees. Tonight will be breezy, with a low of 37 degrees.

2.  The Center Groton Fire Department is holding its first annual Holiday Fund Drive all day today at the station at 163 Candlewood Road.  Here’s the idea behind the drive: The department asks people to fill out a registration form, give a $5 donation to the fire department and bring a pre-wrapped gift. The department will then deliver the gift using the fire truck, sirens blaring, on Christmas Eve.

3.  The Groton Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. today in the music room of the Groton Senior Center. Agenda items include updates on redistricting, hiring and the budget. The Town Council’s committee of the whole meeting scheduled for tonight has been canceled.

4.  Groton Master Patrol Officer Bridget Nordstrom was promoted as of Monday to investigator/youth officer in the special services division, the police department said. Nordstrom has been with the department 16 years, has served on the bicycle patrol, as a background investigator and on the state-wide and Groton narcotics units. She received the U.S. Attorneys award in 2012.

She has served as the school resource officer at Fitch High School. On Tuesday, Officer Scott Bousquet will take over as school resource officer at Fitch.

5.  The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce will hold its 2012 Annual Award Recipients Celebration at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 6 at the Mystic Marriott. Award recipients include Mark and Mike Sauchuk, Nicholas Silvia, Jonathan Duncklee and Ana Schneider, according to the town manager’s weekly report. For tickets, call (860) 572-9578.
