Daily Five: Town Committee To Consider $11.2 Million Bond Referendum For Roads

Five Things To Know, Monday, Aug. 6

1.  Today is Monday, Aug. 6.  The National Weather Service predicts mostly cloudy skies, a high temperature of 84 degrees and showers and thunderstorms before noon. Skies will gradually clear during the day and the low will fall to 60 degrees tonight.

2.  Representative Town Meeting’s public works committee will meet at 7 p.m. today in the Town Hall Annex to discuss . The Town Council voted last month to proceed with the proposed ordinance, which would appear on the November ballot if Representative Town Meeting agrees.

The ordinance calls for $11.2 million to be appropriated for road work from 2013 until 2017. Of the total, $3.54 million would be spent on roads in Groton City; $986,000 would be spent on roads in Groton Long Point; $6.36 million would be spent on roads in the town; and about $300,000 would be spent on financing costs.

3.  Groton Town Police will host the third annual National Night Out from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Poquonnock Plains Park. which promotes public safety and teaches children and families about the work of emergency personnel. Target is sponsoring the event,

Organizations expected to attend include fire departments, the police department’s bike patrol, K-9 and motorcycle units, Groton Ambulance, The Department of Parks and Recreation, Gabriele’s Karate, the Groton Elks, Lifestar, the United States Coast Guard and the U.S. Sub Base Police.

4.  has hired a former football coach at New London High School and St. Bernard High School as its new athletic director.  The school hired Marc Romano, a special education teacher at Fitch, according to a briefing memo by Interim Superintendent Randall Collins. 

Romano served as head football coach at New London High two years and won the Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Championship in 2004, the memo said. Romano was also head football coach at St. Bernard’s High School for three years, and the team won the ECC Small Championship in 2006 and 2008, the memo said.

5.  The Connecticut Department of Social Services’ Medicare Rx-Xpress bus will be in Groton from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Aug. 15 at if you need help. The bus provides help with Medicaid and Medicare assistance, HUSKY medical insurance, food stamp applications and information. Appointments are recommended; call (860) 441-6760.
