Daily Five: Update On Mystic Streetscape Expected Tonight

1. Today is Tuesday, June 19. The National Weather Service predicts cloudy skies this morning, then gradual clearing and a high temperature of 69 degrees. The low will drop to 64 tonight.
2. The Town Council will receive an update on the Mystic streetscape project during its committee of the whole meeting at 6 p.m. today in the Town Hall Annex. This may be discussed in executive session because of potential litigation, according to the town council agenda.
, saying it's crushing their businesses and jeopardizing the health of downtown. Construction has blocked roads, created traffic jams and torn sidewalks; four businesses have moved out or closed since March.

3. Councilors are also expected to discuss a plan to spend $50,000 to lease the Mystic Arts Center parking lot and provide free parking to tourists and other customers. Town Manger Mark Oefinger said in a report to the council he discussed the issue with art center’s executive director, and the lease would cost $7,954 per week. If the council agrees to spend the money for this, it could provide free parking for 44 days. Oefinger recommends that parking be offered June 23 through Aug. 5.
4. Several Groton artists were recognized in the regional art show at the senior center in Norwich, a report by the town manger said. Pete Gunn won “best in show” for his pastel drawing of a sailing team and Sandra Oldfield won honorable mention in the same category; Paul Wolf won second place and Dorothy Murray won third place for pencil, pen and ink; Beatrice Patterson won first place for acrylic painting; Ramona Klauss won second place for oil painting; Margorie Reed won first place for watercolor; Dan O’Donnell won third place for photography, and Pete Gunn won first place for sculpture.
