Five Things To Know Today

A Tax Bill Typo, A City Charter Review Commission And Wild Animals

1.  Today is Tuesday, July 5.  It'll be sunny, with a high temperature of 82 degrees today and a low of 64 degrees tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

2.  An error was made on car tax bills that were mailed out July 1 in Groton, according to the town's website. The bills list the model year of all vehicles as 2010, but the actual assessed value on the bills is correct, the website says. "Please be assured that although the model year that printed is incorrect, the assessed value of your vehicle was based on the correct model year provided by the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles and the tax was computed on that correct value," the website says. For questions, call the tax office at (860) 441-6670.

3.  The Groton City Council meets at 7:30 p.m. today in the municipal building on Meridian Street, and is expected to vote on forming a commission to review the city charter. The council will also vote on appointing the following people to the commission: Shirley Dunbar-Rose (D) as chair, William Blaisdell (D), Mary Kelly (D), Lisa Luck (D), Eugenia Fafard (U), Frank Jennette (U), Peter Berns (R), Andrew Lavery (R) and Robert Zuliani (R).

4.  The Groton Town Council will hold a public hearing at 7:30 p.m. today in the Town Hall Annex on an ordinance authorizing $2.7 million to upgrade Groton’s wastewater treatment plant. The town is eligible for state funding and a low-interest loan to make the improvements, but must have the spending approved locally before November. A bond referendum is scheduled for Sept. 13.

5.  Bill Memorial Library is offering a program from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. today, in conjunction with the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center, about how to be a good neighbor to wild animals.  The program, part of the "One World, Many Stories" summer reading program, teaches children and adults what to do if they see an injured bird or turtle, for example. For more information, call the library at (860) 445-0392.
