Five Things To Know Today

School-Based Health Centers, Scholarships And An Industrial Development

1.  Today is Friday, July 15. It'll be beautiful out. The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies, a high temperature of 78 degrees and a low of 61 tonight.

2.  Child & Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut, which runs 18 school-based health centers, including those in Groton, has received a $436,237 award from the Health Resources and Services Administration, U.S. Rep. Joseph Courtney said Thursday. The agency will use the money to buy an electronic health record system for the centers, he said. "These funds will ensure that students, many of whom rely on these centers for primary care, can get back on their feet and back in the classroom,” Courtney said in a prepared statement.

3.  The Groton Rotary Club gave three scholarships worth a total of $1,500 to two Fitch Senior High School students and an adult student this week. Neariah Jarvis, of Noank, will study culinary management at Southern New Hampshire University; Annaliisa Erickson, of Groton, will start as a preveterinary major at the University of Connecticut at Avery Point; and Jaimice Fine-Clark, of Groton, will study at Three Rivers Community College to become a registered nurse.

4.  The Groton Planning Commission has approved a site plan for a proposed industrial development at 90 Leonard Drive near the airport. An Uncasville company plans to construct two industrial buildings - 9,900 square feet and 4,800 square feet – which would then be leased to small businesses and industries.  The company would also install a 30,000-gallon propane tank, create parking, a driveway and build a small gazebo.

5.  Former Connecticut Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz will speak at the Bethsaida's 2nd Annual Empowering Women Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. today at the Groton Inn & Suites. Channavy Chhay, executive director of the Socio-Economic Development Center for Southeast Asians will also speak.
