Five Things To Know Today, Oct. 19

An Anti-Smoking Video, A Scholarship Awards Dinner And The Groton Business Association

1.  Today is Wednesday, Oct. 19.  The National Weather Service predicts rain, with possible heavy downpours, and a high temperature of 63 degrees. The low will drop to 57 tonight.

2.  A group of young women in the STEPS program (Strive Toward Empowered Personal Success) worked with Ledge Light Health District this summer to create an anti-smoking video for young people. The health district used a grant for the project and received support from the Groton Public Schools, Groton Adolescent Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition and the Mystic Arts Center.  To check out the video, click http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUBeMGy6j1g

3.  The 30th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Trust Fund dinner will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday at the Mystic Marriott Hotel. The dinner awards scholarships to local students who demonstrate academic excellence and achieve success through the principles King stood for.

4.  The Groton Business Association holds its next meeting from 7:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Bridge Market on Fort Hill Road in Groton. The meeting is free, and provides a chance for businesses to gather and discuss local events and promote local companies. For more information, call Tricia Walsh at (860) 572-9578.

5.  Genealogist Michael Spellmon will offer a lecture at 7 p.m. on Oct. 26 at Groton Public Library on checking your family tree for Civil War veterans.
