Five Things To Know Today, Oct. 31

A Revolutionary Thanksgiving, A Benefit And The State Archaeologist

1.  Today is Monday, Oct. 31. The National Weather Service forecasts mostly sunny skies and a high temperature of 50 degrees, but a low of 41 tonight for trick-or-treating.

2.  If you love history, The Jabez Smith House is holding a free event that celebrates the signing of the Treaty of Paris in the year 1783. The program, called a "Revolutionary Thanksgiving", will be held from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Nov. 6 at the house on North Road. The program includes a cooking demonstration, 18th century games for the kids, a presentation about herbs and how they were used in medicine, food and textile dyes, and a lecture at 1 p.m. by National Park Historian Robert Selig about the Washington-Rochambeau revolutionary trail. 3.  Fitch Volleyball Alumni have scheduled a tournament/benefit for a father who died unexpectedly, leaving two young daughters. Christian Serraro, 36, died of a heart attack on Sept. 28.  Money raised from the benefit will support his daughters, May, 3 and Clara, 5 months. 4.  State Archaeologist Nicholas Bellantoni will give a talk at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Groton Public Library on the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley, and the union soldier from Connecticut whose identification tag was found in the ship. The Hunley was the first Civil War submarine to sink in enemy combat, and when it was raised from Charleston Harbor, archaeologists found the tag of Ezra Chamberlin, a Union soldier from Killingly. The program on Wednesday is free and open to the public, and one in a series at Groton Public Library commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

5.  Mystic has a new business called Tailored to You that specializes in alterations. Catherine Shafer, the owner and seamstress, makes alterations including men's and women’s clothing, bridal wear and home projects like window treatments. The shop on 29 Broadway Avenue is open from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday and from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday.
