Five Things To Know Today, Sept. 22

Linda McMahon, A Fire Boat And Help For Laid Off Casino Workers

1.  Today is Thursday, Sept. 22. The National Weather Service predicts fog this morning, then cloudy skies with showers likely. The high temperature will reach 72 degrees; the low will drop to 65 tonight.

2. Linda McMahon, who announced Tuesday she will run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Joseph Lieberman, will visit Groton this morning. McMahon, the former CEO of World Wresting Entertainment, is starting a three-day tour of businesses at 8:30 a.m. at Columbia Air Service, where she will tour the building and meet with employees. She also plans stops in East Hartford, Glastonbury, Manchester and Danbury.

3.  The Mystic Fire Department will receive $700,000 in federal funding from the Department of Homeland Security and FEMA’s Port Security Grant Program to buy a fire boat. The boat will stay in Mystic but will be available to respond to regional emergencies, according to a statement by Congressman Joseph Courtney's office. Mystic Fire Department Chief Frank Hilbert said in the statement that many residential areas, such as Mason's Island, have no fire hydrants and little or no water for firefighting.  “In the event of a need in these areas, water must be delivered by tanker truck which takes some time to arrive. This fire boat will fulfill that need," he said.

4.  CTWorks Career Centers are offering free re-employment services for people who were laid off from Mohegan Sun Casino in September 2010, according to a statement released Wednesday by The Eastern Connecticut Workforce Investment Board. The board received a national emergency grant to help people job search and upgrade their skills so they can better market themselves. The program is free to those who were laid off from the casino in September 2010, but also extends to people who were laid off later. 5.  The Lighthouse Voc-Ed Center, a private special education school in Groton, will hold a conference to teach people more about using the iPad. The conference, called "App-Tastic: Assistive Technology Conference" will be from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at the Mystic Marriott. The conference will include presentations on how to use the iPad with children with autism. The registration fee is $25.
