Groton Facing Millions In Budget Cuts

Major cuts are needed to avoid a tax rate hike.

GROTON — Residents will be facing some major budget cuts if the tax rate remains the same for the next fiscal year.

The town is facing $6.4 million in cuts from the proposed $125.6 million budget to avoid a tax rate increase, according to The Day.

Taxpayers are looking at an 8.3 percent tax rate hike under the proposed town budget. Although spending has decreased, the town is dealing with major revenue losses, according to the town manager's office.

Councilor Diane Barber told The Day that folks cannot afford such a drastic hike on their tax bill.

She hopes furloughs of town employees could reduce costs and wants to see if the Board of Education can contribute.
