GUILFORD, CT — If you’re like many of your Guilford neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.

Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.

Maintaining funding is a constant challenge for many nonprofits that fill gaps and meet other needs in the Guilford area.

Here are five local nonprofits to consider getting behind on Giving Tuesday:

  1. Woman and Family Life Center: The mission of Woman and Family Life is to empower women and all facilities during challenging life transitions. Woman and Family Life provides services that include but are not limited to recourses, programs, education and referrals for women and fall families in crisis. The Woman and Family Life Center envisions communities where women and all families are free from violence and harassment, are economically secure and have access to equitable opportunities.
  2. The Guilford Foundation: The Mission of The Guilford Foundation is to enrich the quality of life in the community by connecting people who care with causes that matter now and for generations to come. The Guilford Foundation values integrity and equity as they actively seek to be a responsible, collaborative and trusted leader that makes positive differences in the community.
  3. Guilford Center For Children: In 1971, Guilford Center for Children is a nonprofit organization offering high-quality early education and before and after school programs for working families in Guilford and surrounding areas. The curriculum includes development, motor activities, creative arts, science, cooking, multicultural awareness and time for free play.
  4. SARAH Foundation: Founded in 1957, the SARAH family of agencies serves hundreds of local individuals living with intellectual and other disabilities. Programs and services include residential housing and support, day programs and recreational activities, and respite care. The nonprofit's main goal is to help individuals live fulfilling, productive and engaged lives within the community.
  5. Discover Your Path: Discover Your Path wishes to empower at-risk youth to find passion, motivation and drive for a better life. They believe every young person is one caring adult away from becoming a success story. They believe people navigate their lives around what they see and hope to shine a light on new and positive horizons for young adults and see what happens when those seeds are planted.
