GUILFORD, CT — Several bicycles left on the side of the road in Guilford were taken Sunday and placed on Facebook Marketplace in what police are calling a misunderstanding.

On Sept. 14 at around 10:30 a.m., a family of five was riding their bicycles and stopped to greet friends in the area of State Street and Golden Hills, according to the Guilford Police Department. The bicycles and helmets were left leaning on a stone wall near the house.

When the family returned, they noticed their bicycles were missing, police said.

Police asked for the public's help to recover the missing bicycles, saying, "The family believes someone may have mistaken them for 'free' bikes and hopes they were not intentionally stolen."

In an update Monday morning, police announced the bicycles were located and taken back to their rightful owners.

"They were listed on Marketplace and when officers contacted the seller, it was determined that they thought the bikes were left out for free," police said.
