First Day of Spring is March 20

Considering it's March and we're still wearing sweaters and peacoats, winter seems like it's been around forever. Luckily, a new season is here, since the official first day of spring is Wednesday, March 20.

According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, spring starts with the vernal equinox at 7:02 a.m. that day. The almanac explains the word "equinox" is Latin for "equal night," which is exactly what spring is: The times for day and night are approximately 12 hours long.

"The Sun crosses the celestial equator going northward; it rises exactly due east and sets exactly due west," continues the website.

Did you know that not all of the seasons are equally divided in terms of days? The current seasonal lengths for the Northern Hemisphere are:

Summer – 93.641 days
Autumn – 89.834 days
Winter – 88.994 days
Spring – 92.771 days

For those who prefer warmer weather, there is good news: the warm seasons, spring and summer, combined are 7.584 days longer than the colder seasons, fall and winter.

So, Spring is here- but will Guilford be getting spring weather? There's a small chance of snow Thursday, but Friday through the weekend looks like sun! Here's what the National Weather Service is forecasting:

• Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 40. West wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph.
• Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 25. West wind 3 to 7 mph.
• Thursday: A chance of snow, mainly between 11am and 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 37. North wind 5 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
• Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 25.
• Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 40.
• Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 28.
• Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 44.
• Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 29.
• Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 43.
• Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 30.
• Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 44.
