Food Scrap Recycling Free For Guilford, Madison Residents

Guilford City Officials said residents can now drop food scraps into the bin at the Transfer Station.

GUILFORD, CT – Guilford city officials said the Food Scrap Recycling program is now free for all Guilford and Madison residents at the Transfer Station, 1900 Boston Post Rd.

City officials said special bins are available to collect food scraps, which can be dropped into the bin in a bag or without.

Acceptable food scraps are meat and poultry (bones ok), fruits and vegetables without stickers, fish and shellfish (shells ok), rice and grains, leftover and spoiled food, chips and snacks, dairy products, egg shells, bread and pasta, nuts and seeds, tea bags with no staples and coffee grounds.

Unacceptable items are take-out containers, plastic or compostable utensils, napkins and paper towels, plastic bottles, a glass of any kind, diapers, clothing and rags, pet waste, metal and aluminum foil, aluminum cans, plastic wrap and juice or milk boxes.

The Sustainable Materials Management Grant Program administered by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection provides funding for the Food Scrap Recycling program.
