Thanks to a major donation from AT&T, Girls Coach Girls Run, a program run by the Women and Family Life Center, is in its fourth year. The program, which promotes leadership, self-respect, community involvement, and healthy living for girls is currently in need of volunteers.
The following is a press release from Girls Coach Girls Run:
Girls Coach Girls Run (GCGR), now entering its fourth year at Women & Family Life (W&FL) in Guilford, is looking for adults to help as site supervisors at Madison and Guilford schools where the program will operate during April and May. GCGR promotes leadership, self-respect, community involvement, and healthy living for girls as part of a 3-tier peer mentoring program. Volunteers need not be runners or coaches since high school junior and senior girls serve as coaches for the program that trains 4th grade girls for a 5K run in June. The program is being funded by a major grant from AT&T.
Site supervisors are needed on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45 to 5:30 pm from April 23 through May 30, and for the 5K run on June 4. Supervisors will handle set-up and clean-up, check supplies, assist with crowd control and provide basic first aid should it be needed. The real benefit is the inter-generational involvement between the young coaches and adult mentors who are the site supervisors.
Anyone interested in volunteering for the GCGR program should contact Program Director Emily Oakes at The Women & Family Life Center (203) 458-6699. The W&FL website offers detailed information about the program also.
Women & Family Life is a nonprofit organization that assists women and their families facing crisis or major life transitions.
