Guilford Art League 2024 Winter Show

Featuring 51 Artists and E.C. Adams Middle School Ekphrastic Poetry Collaboration

The Guilford Art League is pleased to present its 2024 Winter Show featuring 51 works by member artists, on view in the Menunkatuck Room at the Guilford Community Center. The show will also feature ekphrastic poems written by E.C. Adams Middle School’s Writer’s Block club. The public is invited to attend an Opening Reception on Tuesday, February 6 from 5-7pm. The show runs through the end of April.

Writer’s Block is an E.C. Adams Middle School club, advised by 7th grade ELA teacher Mr. Philip Day, whose primary goal is to provide a forum for aspiring writers to gain inspiration and feedback from other aspiring writers. In addition to meeting weekly to practice and share writings, they utilize a website, which allows members to publish their work for an audience and give the gift of constructive feedback.

Recently, Writer’s Block partnered with local Guilford poet Ed Lent, endeavoring to write ekphrastic poetry for the Guilford Arts League. The word ekphrasis comes from the Greek for the written description of a work of art produced as a rhetorical or literary exercise. Writer’s Block members worked with Mr. Lent on developing their ekphrastic poetry skills over the course of several weeks, writing about his paintings as well as other works of art.

On January 18th, the club visited the Guilford Community Center’s Menunkatuck Room to preview the Guilford Arts League 2024 Winter Show. There, members selected a piece of art to write an ekphrastic poem about. Afterwards, Mr. Lent and Mr. Day selected poems to be published alongside these works of art, which can be read on the Guilford Art League website.

The Guilford Art League was founded in 1947 by a small group of local artists. The objective of the art league is to promote and stimulate interest in the visual arts. Members and associates of the Guilford Art League are a participating and interactive group of artists who learn and benefit from their association with one another.
