Guilford PD: Practice Safe Driving and Cycling This Summer

Guilford, CT - An early July car vs. bicyclist crash in Guilford is causing some drivers and cyclists to brush up on their safety knowledge.

According to a report in The Guilford Courier, the July 2 accident occurred in the late morning when a bike rider and motorist collided on Boston Post Road, as the car was pulling out.

Guilford Police Chief Jeff Hutchinson told the paper that both drivers and cyclists need to pay attention to the roads and follow the rules of proper driving and bike safety.

AAA has several tips for staying safe while bicycling on the roads with vehicles.

According to AAA, the top 10 tips for safe cycling are:

1. Wear a helmet.

2. Keep your head up. Always look ahead.

3. Keep it to one person per bike.

4. Ride single file.

5. Ride on the right side of the road, not against traffic.

6. Plan ahead when riding with groups.

7. Check local laws and rules prior to heading out.

8. Avoid roads during high traffic times.

9. Check visibilty before you ride at night.

10. Practice good maintenance with your bike.
