Guilford Residents Applaud Cannabis Moratorium Extension

GUILFORD, CT – Guilford Board of Selectmen is considering extending the temporary moratorium on cannabis establishments in the town.

“The board is looking to extend the moratorium at least through the end of the year,” Matt Hoey said, First Selectman.

During the First Selectmen Meeting on Aug. 7, public members could give their opinion on extending the temporary moratorium during the public hearing meeting.

Sue Hydinger told the board even though cannabis is legal; she’s glad they are pausing to consider whether Guilford will host cannabis retail. She also told the board that extending the moratorium was wise “Because the impact on Guilford can be quite challenging.”

Peter Filardi applauded the board’s decision to extend the moratorium. He told the board that medical research hasn’t caught up with legislation and the board needs to “take a beat and pump the brakes a bit.”

Cody Richard told the board that the extension of the mortarium is valuable instead of “just putting the hammer down.” He also said different types of categories within the cannabis industry should be considered.

Lou Rinaldi said he appreciates the pause and thoughtful, nuanced consideration for all possible permutations.

First Selectman Hoey said he’s still working on a draft of an ordinance and potential parameters.
