Guilford is moving toward adopting a plastic bag ban while watching whether the state beats the town to the punch and acts first.

GUILFORD, CT - The town is making major strides towards adopting a plastic bag ban ordinance even while keeping an eye on the state which may wind up enacting a ban statewide.

At the most recent Board of Selectmen meeting, First Selectman Matt Hoey said that Sustainable Guilford has been meeting with a lot of area businesses to talk about a possible ban.

He said that Big Y, Bishop's, Page's and the Marketplace have all committed to banning plastic bags.

In the meantime, Hoey noted that there are 18 different bills in front of the General Assembly that have some sort of language concerning plastic bag bans. He said depending on how those bills fare the town issue may be less important or moot if a statewide ban is eventually adopted.

But, Hoey added, he wants to be prepared if the legislature doesn't pass something to have Guilford ready to join the growing list of towns who have on their own passed plastic bag bans.
