GUILFORD, CT - The annual Lifelinx Day 5K Nick Kruczek Color Run/Walk for Recovery, slated for Saturday, May 4th, takes on special meaning this year - as the race is dedicated to Nick's Hand High School hockey teammate, who like Nick, died from a drug overdose.

This year's event, as always at the Guilford Fair Grounds on Lovers Lane, is dedicated to Joe Deane, who passed away last December at the age of 23.

To Sue Kruczek who lost her own son, Nick at age 20 to a drug overdose, dedicating the event this year to Joe's memory was a no brainer.

"Joe and Nick were linemates and friends," said Sue Kruczek. "Nick loved having Joe as his wingman on and off the ice. It breaks my heart that his favorite wingman is now his wingman in heaven."

Sue Kruczek added: "They both fought hard and wanted nothing more than to beat the beast of addiction. The drugs won the game."

But, added Sue Kruczek who has become known state and countrywide for her advocacy in fighting the opioid and heroin epidemic plaguing the nation, vowed: "Together we will fight and battle against substance use disorder for all those who can no longer and those who are still fighting this beast."

This is an opportunity for people of all ages to join in an explosion of color with friends and family.

The 5K course will be from the fairgrounds to Jacobs Beach and back. As you run or walk the course, you will be bombarded with color.

This is not your grandma's traditional 5K, although she is certainly welcome to participate and we know several who are planning to do so. The course will be set up so you can bypass the color stations if you wish to do so.

There will be no chip timing for runners, and the prizes will be for the first male and first female across the finish line.

Serious runners should line up at the front of the starting pack. Of course there will be a timing clock so you can track your own time.

THIS WILL BE THE KICKOFF EVENT FOR GUILFORD'S DAY WEEK, CONCEIVED AND LED BY DAY YOUTH, IN WHICH THE COLOR PURPLE IS USED TO SYMBOLIZE YOUTH SOBRIETY. THE YOUTH USE PURPLE TO VISIBLY COMMIT TO LIVING CLEAN, AND SEE THAT THEY ARE NOT ALONE, BUT THAT THEY ARE IN THE MAJORITY. ADULTS USE PURPLE TO DEMONSTRATE THEIR SUPPORT FOR GUILFORD'S YOUTH AND THEIR VALUES. EVERYONE COMMITS TO HELPING EACH OTHER, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO NEED ENCOURAGEMENT AND RECOVERY SUPPORT.
