Overnight Train Derailment Suspends Amtrak Services Between New York and Boston

Amtrak services between New York and Boston are currently suspended due to the overnight derailment of a Providence and Worcester freight train in the New Haven area. Amtrak is providing special services for passengers to accommodate travel needs.

 

Update 2:45 PM, March 17

Amtrak recently updated the status of the lines between New York and Boston after a freight train was derailed overnight. They anticipate that services will be restored sometime this afternoon.

Amtrak will restore Acela Express and Northeast Regional service on the Northeast Corridor between New York and Boston this afternoon.

The first northbound departure from New York Penn Station will be Train 194 at 5:00pm. The first southbound departure from Boston South Station will be Train 2259 at 4:10pm.

Passengers should expect residual delays through the New Haven area as a result of the derailed Providence & Worcester freight train that has been blocking the tracks since early this morning.

Services between New York and Boston are suspended on Amtrak due to an overnight train derailment in the New Haven area. As of the latest update, at 10:25 AM, services were still not restored to the line. 

Amtrak have released the following details on their website:

Due to the overnight derailment of a Providence & Worcester freight train in the New Haven, Conn. area, which is blocking tracks on the Northeast Corridor, Amtrak service remains suspended between New York and Boston. However, Amtrak is making special arrangements for passengers attempting to travel between those cities today...

As of their latest update, Amtrak crews remain on the scene of the derailment, about 3 miles east of New Haven. There is still no estimate for resumption of service. 

Visit Amtrak's website for full details on the detours they are offering to accommodate passengers. They do note that passengers should allow "significant extra time to make this trip in either direction."
