Guilford — As the 2023 municipal elections get closer in Guilford, plenty of races with candidates are eager to serve in elected office.

Guilford Patch asked candidates to answer questions about their campaigns and will publish candidate profiles as Election Day draws near.

Michael Ayles, 55, an architect, is running for reelection on the Guilford Board of Finance as a democratic candidate.

Hersh holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Roger Williams University and is married to his wife Tricia; together, they have three children in their 20s.

Why are you seeking this office?

To continue to maintain the level of services expected by residents of the Town of Guilford while ensuring fair and equitable budgets and strong financial stability.

Please complete this statement: The single most pressing issue facing my constituents is ___, and this is what I intend to do about it.

Balancing smart economic growth in our Town while keeping the small-town culture and community that we all enjoy as residents and business owners. Encouraging long-term planning efforts and building on our financial stability with healthy reserves and high credit ratings will continue to grow our grand list and keep taxes reasonable and fair.

What are the major differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post?

My views are in alignment with those candidates running for the Board of Finance.

What other issues do you intend to address during your campaign?

Keeping a close eye on the effects of healthcare, capital expenditures, our pension liabilities, and grand list growth ... as all have major impacts on the annual budgets we recommend and review monthly.

What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?

Sixteen years on the Board of Finance and six years as Chair.

What is the best advice anyone ever gave you?

When there is adversity or a conflicting view, seek to understand why because everyone's viewpoint is unique and based on their experience.
