Pilot Program Aims To Close Gaps In Public Transportation

The Pilot Program will be serving Guilford and Madison through the Estuary Transit.

GUILFORD, CT — The Estuary Transit (River Valley Transit) is adding a Microtransit Pilot Program to help expand transportation options.

On Nov. 13, Governor Ned Lamont and Transportation Commissioner Garret Eucalitto announced the Connecticut Department of Transportation was awarding funding to transit districts and municipalities in Connecticut to develop and pilot an on-demand microtransit service.

The Estuary Transit is receiving three pilots serving Guilford, Madison and a portion of East Hampton and Middletown.

“The CTDOT Microtransit Pilot Program is integral to the contributed modernization of our state’s robust public transportation and makes Connecticut more accessible to more people,” Eucalitto said.

The Microtransit Pilot Program was authorized by Public Act 22-40, and solicitation for projects was released in January 2023.

Microtransit Services within the awarded municipalities or transit districts service areas will begin within six months of the award. The pilot program will last for two years with the possibility of two one-year extensions exercisable by CDOT, based on performance and ridership.

“Microtransit is bringing additional transportation services to more people,” Lamont said. “With the first and last mile connections, gaps in Connecticut’s extensive public transpiration system will be closed. Whether going to an appointment, grabbing a bite to eat or meeting up with friends and family, microtransit service improves the quality of life for our residents.”
