Strong Winds Could Mean Power Outages for Guilford

With wind gusts potentially reaching 50 mph Thursday, Guilford could see some power outages in areas. Snow accumulation for the storm isn't as high as first predicted, but roads may be slippery.

 

A Wind Advisory is in effect for Guilford through Thursday according to the National Weather Service. North winds will reach 20 to 30 mph, with wind gusts up to 50 mph. That could mean some power outages for Guilford.

According to the advisory, impacts of the winds, combined with wet snow we are due for could include the following:

THESE WINDS COULD BRING DOWN TREE BRANCHES AND LIMBS...AS WELL AS POWER LINES...ESPECIALLY COMBINED WITH ANY ACCUMULATING WET SNOW. DRIVING WILL BE DIFFICULT...ESPECIALLY ON ELEVATED ROADWAYS AND BRIDGES FOR HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES.

According to Accuweather.com, snow, mixed with rain at times will begin Wednesday and continue through Friday morning, with snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches.

"We're going through the usual preparations with public works," says First Selectman Joe Mazza. "According to the latest forecast, we won't be seeing too much snow accumulation. But our Public Works guys are alert, available and ready."

"Our main concern will be the wind gusts, which could get up to 50 miles an hour," continued Mazza. "With high winds, we should always prepare ourselves for potential power outages. There's also going to be some wet snow and rain, so residents should be careful on the roads, which could get a bit slippery."

Here's the latest forecast for Guilford according to the National Weather Service

  • Tonight: Rain and snow, becoming all snow after midnight. Low around 36. Windy, with a north wind 23 to 26 mph, with gusts as high as 46 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.
  • Thursday: Snow. High near 39. Windy, with a north wind 22 to 28 mph, with gusts as high as 47 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.
  • Thursday Night: Snow. Low around 32. Breezy, with a north wind 15 to 23 mph, with gusts as high as 43 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.
  • Friday: Snow before noon, then a chance of rain and snow. High near 41. Breezy, with a north wind 18 to 22 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
