GUILFORD, CT — After the agency handling the T.J. Maxx signage pulled the application for the former Walmart location, First Selectman Matt Hoey said the town is helping in any way they can to attract a new business.

“At this point, it sounds like T.J. Maxx is out,” he said. “There’s also been some social media rumblings from the folks in Clinton that T.J. Maxx is not going to leave Clinton to come here.”

Hoey said Guilford’s Economic Development Coordinator Sheri Cote continues working with the ownership group and realtors to try and attract and support efforts to bring another business into the former Walmart location.

“We hope we can get something in there because Walmart filled a need for a significant part of our community,” he said.

Walmart closed its doors at its 900 Boston Post Road location in May 2022. At that time, a senior Walmart corporate officer said it was a “difficult decision to close” the store after a “thoughtful review process.”

“I think it would be fair to say that I was in Walmart at least once a week,” Hoey said.

Hoey said the realtor and the development company have yet to say the names of any companies they are actively recruiting.

“But I do know they are actively working with a couple of potential opportunities for the location. That much I do know,” he said.
