Police: " There are far more legitimate people selling and buying items online, but the scammers are actively out there."
GUILFORD, CT - Guilford police are warning residents that if a deal sounds too good to be true, well, it probably is.
On social media police said: “Time for Tuesday with Trending Scams:
“So we are selling unicorns on the internet for $600...

“Yes... we are going with unicorns on this one
“And to our surprise, this really cool guy offers us double the price for a mythical unicorn

“He sends a really hard to read email advising that “it is just what he wants” and “he does not even need to come look at our unicorn”...
“Sight unseen, he offers to send us $1200 for the $600 unicorn...
“We know what you are thinking
“This is incredible luck... better jump on this offer
“This guy writes, “I am going to send you a check for $1500. Please cash it and I only ask that you forward the excess $300 to my unicorn trainer who will be trailering him home once purchased. I have enclosed the information for the wire transfer of the $300 to complete the transaction.”
Well, pinch us because this is too good to be true... AND IT IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE.
“People do NOT offer you more than you are listing the item, apartment, car, house, service, etc.
More often they try to bargain you down rather than pay full price #amiright
“This type of check and money laundering scam happens all the time... the check looks legitimate and deposits in your account at first. However, it can take up to 3 weeks for a bank to determine the check is fraudulent and by that time, most people have sent the money requested back to the scammer.
“It has been happening for years on various websites. Be aware of these scams... spread the word to anyone you know that is conducting transactions on these websites. There are far more legitimate people selling and buying items online, but the scammers are actively out there, trolling these sites for unsuspecting victims.”
