Cops: Argument Between Former Roommates Leads to Stabbing

A fight in a Dixwell Avenue parking lot led to the stabbing of one man and arrest of another Wednesday night, according to Hamden Police.

At about 8:30 p.m. police responded to the report of a fight in progress in the lot at 1245 Dixwell Ave. at the shopping plaza next to Putnam Avenue.

As Officer Michael Nawrocki was responding to the call, he saw a car fleeing the area at a high rate of speed, according to police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith. He pulled the car over on Mill Rock Road, Smith said.

The driver of the car, Samuel Redd, 28, was suffering from a stab wound to the shoulder, Smith said, and told officers that he was driving himself to a local hospital. Hamden Fire Rescue was called and treated Redd at the scene before he was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital, Smith said.

Officers learned that Redd and his former roommate, Maurice Heard, 29, of 70 East Pearl St., New Haven, had gotten into an argument in the area of 1245 Dixwell Ave. It uitlimately turned physical when Heard stabbed Redd in the shoulder, Smith said.

Heard was charged with second-degree assault and breach of peace. He was held in lieu of $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on July 5.

Samuel Redd, 28, of 285 Quinnipiac Ave., Apartment C3, New Haven, also was charged with breach of peace, Smith said.

Det. Brian Stewart is conducting the investigation, Smith said.
