Five Quinnipiac Teams Earn NCAA Public Recognition Award for High APR Scores

Five Quinnipiac University teams have received a Public Recognition Award from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for earning high scores in the most recent Academic Progress Rate (APR) compilation.

The Quinnipiac squads recognized by the NCAA include: men’s indoor track & field, women’s cross country, women’s golf, women’s indoor track & field and women’s outdoor track & field. All five teams are rewarded for scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with respect to their Academic Progress Rates (APRs).

Quinnipiac placed five teams on the list for the third straight year and has now landed at least four teams in five out of the eight years of the program’s existence. Quinnipiac posted a personal best of six teams in the inaugural compilation back in 2004-05. The women’s indoor track & field and women’s cross country teams were recognized for a fourth time, while the women’s outdoor track & field and men’s indoor track & field were honored for a third time. Women’s golf was a first-time recipient.

“We are once again very pleased with our overall continued academic success of our teams overall,” said Jack McDonald, Quinnipiac University director of athletics and recreation. “And we are particularly proud of our women’s indoor track & field and women's cross country teams, who were recognized for the fourth time! To represent a university with five teams says a lot about our athletic department, not only on the field of play but in the classroom as well.”

Each year, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team through the annual scorecard of academic achievement, known as APR. The rate measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter and provides a clear picture of the academic performance in each sport. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-2012 academic years.

The NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multi-year APR. The announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.
