Hamden Man Charged in July 2010 Shooting

A Hamden man has been charged with first-degree assault in connection with a July 2010 shooting that left a man with permanent injuries. 

Marquis Winfrey Sr., 22, of 28 Fawn Ridge Rd., Hamden, was charged with first-degree assault and criminal attempt to commit first-degree assault Thursday when he was picked up by Hamden Police Det. Raymond Quinn, along with other members of the United States Marshal Service Connecticut Violent Fugitive Task Force and Hamden Police Department. They located Winfrey and arrested him at 492 Woodin Street. 

Winfrey is charged with the July 2, 2010 shooting of John Belcher, according to police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith.

On July 2nd 2010 at about 12:15a.m. Hamden Police responded to Elliott Drive on the report of a shooting, Smith said. When officer arrived they found Blecher, then 25, lying face down in the driveway with a gunshot wound to the chest and neck, Smith said. Belcher taken to the Hospital of Saint Raphael with serious life threatening injuries, he said.

The investigation found that Belcher was confronted by three individuals who were wearing face masks, and witnesses said that at least two of them had guns, Smith said.

Several shots were fired, and immediately after the shooting, Officer Craig Appleby and his K-9 partner “Hunter” conducted a track, which led to Winfrey's home, Smith said.

After an extensive two year investigation, Det. Angelo DeLieto submitted an arrest warrant application to the court for Winfrey'a arrest, Smith said.

“The arrest in this case would not have been possible without the prolonged efforts and spirit of team work delivered by the New Haven State’s Attorney’s Office, State of Connecticut Forensic Science Laboratory and members of the Hamden Police Department, specifically Detective Angelo DeLieto,” said Police Chief Thomas Wydra.

Winfrey was held in lieu of $250,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Nov. 8.

Belcher suffered permanent injuries as a result of the shooting, Smith said.
