Today's obituaries of Hamden residents.

Eleanor Reed Adair, 86,
of Hamden, died on April 20, 2013, leaving husband, Robert, children Douglas McV. Adair and Margaret Adair Quinn, two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A 1948 graduate of Mt. Holyoke College, which awarded her an honorary D.Sc. Degree in 2007, she received her Ph.D in sensory psychology from the University of Wisconsin in 1955. Working as a fellow of the John B. Pierce Laboratory in New Haven, CT and later as Senior Scientist at the Air Force Research Laboratory in San Antonio, TX, Ellie's researches illuminated the process of thermoregulation in primates and human beings. The extraordinary thermal regulation of humans, nearly as superior among vertebrates as human intelligence, is central to the emergence of man, the naked ape, from his furred anthropoid cousins. From her use of microwaves in the heating of experimental animals and humans in her thermoregulation researches, Ellie became an expert in the physiological consequences of electromagnetic radiation. Her work in that area was noted especially in her 2007 award of the D'Arsonval Medal of the Bioelectromagnetic Society. Her lifelong love of the mountains and deep generosity of spirit were combined in her years as a board member of the American Himalayan Foundation, where she worked to better the lives of the peoples of the Himalaya. The Beecher and Bennett Funeral Home, 2300 Whitney Ave., Hamden is in charge of the arrangements.
